(Support Available In-Person in Sonoma County + Virtually Anywhere)
Bringing home your new baby is one of life’s most unforgettable moments—but those first three nights postpartum? They can feel like a crash course in new parenthood, complete with sleepless nights, hormonal shifts, and a whirlwind of emotion.
Whether you’re home in Santa Rosa, anywhere in Sonoma County, or joining us from across the U.S., Fox & Cub Family Wellness is here to guide and support you through it all—in person or virtually.
Night 1: The Emotional High and the First Adjustment
The first night home often feels like a mix of awe and adrenaline. You may feel elated and exhausted all at once. Your baby might sleep deeply, or they may want to feed every hour. It’s all normal—but it can be a lot.
What to expect:
-
Frequent feedings (every 1–3 hours)
-
Baby falling asleep on you often
-
Difficulty winding down for your own rest
-
Emotional highs (and possibly some unexpected tears)
💛 Tip: Dim the lights, stay skin-to-skin with baby, and release any pressure to “do it all.” Right now, connection is more important than routine.
Night 2: Baby Wakes Up—And You Might, Too
This is often referred to as the “second night syndrome.” Baby becomes more alert and fussy, your milk may be coming in, and emotions can run even higher.
What to expect:
-
Cluster feeding—baby may want to nurse nonstop
-
Crying, restlessness, and comfort-seeking
-
Swollen or engorged breasts
-
Mood swings or feelings of being overwhelmed
💛 Tip: This is temporary. Keep cozy snacks, water, nipple balm, and burp cloths within reach, and remember to take breaks when possible.
Night 3: Deep Fatigue Sets In
By now, sleep deprivation can start to affect your mind and body. You’re healing, learning, and likely running on fumes. You might start to wonder if you’re doing anything “right.” (Spoiler alert: You are.)
What to expect:
-
Baby waking often, still adjusting to life outside the womb
-
Sore nipples or frustration with feeding
-
Bleeding, body aches, and emotional vulnerability
-
Feeling unsure or unprepared
💛 Tip: You deserve rest and support. Whether from a partner, friend, or a professional postpartum doula—lean into help whenever it’s available.
