Do I Need a Doctor’s Referral Before Starting?

For the core Medi-Cal doula benefit, California has issued a statewide standing recommendation.

This means eligible Medi-Cal members generally do not need to obtain their own individual recommendation before beginning the standard covered services.

However, the additional postpartum visits beyond the core benefit do require an additional qualifying recommendation.

How Long Can I Use My Postpartum Benefit?

Medi-Cal postpartum coverage can generally extend through 12 months after the pregnancy ends.

That means your doula support does not necessarily have to end at six weeks postpartum.

If your baby has already arrived and you have not used all of your available services, you may still have benefits remaining.

What if My Baby Is Already Several Months Old?

It may still be worth checking.

If you remain within the postpartum eligibility period and have unused visits, you may still be able to receive doula services.

Families sometimes assume they have missed their opportunity because they did not begin care immediately after birth.

That is not necessarily the case.
