What is a caregiver?

A caregiver is a trusted individual who provides support and care for children or families, either in the home or in the community. Caregivers may help with supervision, daily routines, play, meals, school pickups, light household support related to the child, and overall safety and well-being.

Caregivers can include babysitters, mother’s helpers, part-time or full-time child care providers, and others who support families in different ways depending on their needs. Each caregiver sets their own availability, experience level, and areas of support, allowing families to find someone who feels like the right fit for their household.

Caregiver rates vary based on experience, location, schedule, and the type of support needed. Hourly rates are set by each individual caregiver. As of December 2025, posted hourly rates average $20.75 per hour. Some caregivers may charge more for additional experience, specialized care, or multiple children.

The main difference between a nanny and a babysitter is the level of commitment and scope of care. A babysitter typically provides short-term or occasional care, such as date nights, backup care, or part-time support. Babysitters usually focus on supervision, play, meals, and bedtime routines during scheduled hours.

A nanny generally provides more consistent, ongoing care and may work a regular schedule each week. Nannies often take on broader responsibilities related to the child’s daily routine, development, and schedule, and may become a long-term part of a family’s care team.

Families choose between a nanny and a babysitter based on their needs, schedule, and the level of ongoing support they’re looking for.

Every caregiver on our platform is required to complete a background check before they are able to message families. Caregivers who have completed this step will have a badge displayed on their profile indicating that a background check is on file.

While this screening is an important first step, families are encouraged to take additional measures when selecting a caregiver. This may include interviewing candidates, checking references, and completing any additional background checks they feel are appropriate for their household.

Background checks apply only to the individual caregiver listed on the profile. Caregivers may not bring another person into a family’s home without the family’s prior consent. Bringing an unapproved individual to a job is a violation of our community guidelines and should be reported.
